Fashion During Covid-19

Ava Opper

During these unprecedented times, industries have been forced to adapt and make quick decisions about the way they are going to continue their line of work. Whether to let this be the end for a while or to grow and change as an industry to adapt to these unusual circumstances is something on the minds of most business owners today.  One industry that has faced this challenge and has made an impressive impact is the fashion industry. Fashion brands have been severely impacted by the coronavirus, causing warehouses and manufacturers to close down. However, the way that clothing companies are adapting to the coronavirus is by creating their products to specifically accommodate the current situation. For instance, it is very important to leave surgical masks for healthcare professionals and essential workers. Keeping this in mind, designers all across the globe are putting their own creative twist on these masks.  This provides more access to masks for civilians and has given everyday people something to feel excited about while protecting themselves and others.

Another example of companies adjusting to the changing times includes the clothing brand, Reformation.  Reformation partnered with the City of Los Angeles, as well as Mayor Eric Garcetti to work on an initiative called, “LA Protects.”  This initiative serves “to organize local manufacturers to make five million non-medical masks for brave people doing essential work, ensuring medical-grade masks can be available to healthcare workers,” according to Reformation’s website.  In addition, French couture brand, Louis Vuitton is devoting their manufacturing companies to the sole purpose of producing masks, while assuring workers are safe through social distancing practices.  Moreover, many designers, including Hillary Taymour, have created tutorials on how to create and sew these masks at home by recycling old household items and adding fun aspects to them, such as Tie-Dye, which has been a huge creative outlet for many during the quarantine. Overall, the fashion business is working together as an industry to help the global effort to stay safe and healthy during this critical time.
