How These Women Created The Infamous Ellevest Intentional Impact Portfolios

By Julia French & Kate Kissell

Investment is an obvious commitment to bringing positive change in the world. By knowing that every dollar spent or invested has an impact either for the better or worse. These female investors want investments that fit their values, which vary from person to person, not the ones that will only benefit their bank accounts. Overall, women in the investment world hold their values to make the future for female investors better.

Ellevest has helped investors invest for an impact for a very long time now and so do the female investors. But honestly, there has been a lack of high interest in the market, which is hurting the investors. By viewing mutual funds and ETFs, the majority scored quite well on an outside gender equality index, which mainly focuses on working women in the workspace, which is vital to look at. But Jennie Sanders and Rachel Chamberlain wanted to focus more on the actual policies, products, and actions of publicly traded companies.

Both of the women had a strong appeal for the approach of a non-expensive way to be able to have broad access to investors at the minimum cost. It was a start. With this type of format came a myriad of questions like, What type of actions inside of corporations have a mass effect on the lives of women? And where is this one specific source of data originating from, is it trusted? The answers are all in the Ellevest Intentional Impact.

These portfolios allow you to pick where to invest money that meets the criteria, the women created, which will most likely help women — and help you steer away from investing money into harmful policies. Companies that have sedulous wage gaps and sexist business practices affect not only the women but everyone in the investment community. In contrast to the sexism in this industry, the times that companies act positively for women, is where we can all find a ripple effect of good.

The evaluation for female policies are based on:

  • Diversity in the workplace- due to the poor job these companies do on diversity practices, which allows an increase in gender inequality
  • Labor Relations- with good labor practices, there can be less or no gender pay gap
  • Human Rights and Community-it’s simple, treat others the way you would like to be treated in the workplace, and in general, come on!

And the list goes on and on, focusing on the health of the worker and the impact the worker will have on not only themselves but the world.

Intentional Investing

There is a way to see the impact of your money, and possibly where your investment could have gone to, to benefit society.

There is also an investment portfolio which helps you reach your financial goals, focusing on meeting the clients’ goals by looking at diverse investments made by market returns.
