Billie Jean King: The Road to 75

In honor of Billie Jean King’s 75th birthday, the New-York Historical Society has created a photo exhibit highlighting important events from the feminist icon’s life.  There are 75 photos including one of King’s entrance into the Houston Astrodome for the famous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match against Bobby Riggs in 1973, which was recreated in last year’s movie starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell.  There are also pictures of her testifying before the U.S. Senate and serving as the Grand Marshal for the NYC Pride March in 2018. The exhibit runs through Jan 27th.

Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future

Known as “The Mother of Abstraction,” the Swedish abstract artist said she was instructed by a spirit summoned during a séance to create her unique designs that had no resemblance to reality. She rarely showed her work while alive, believing that people were not ready to understand her innovative images. Klint remained mostly private and requested that her artwork only be shown 20 years after her death. In 1986, Klint’s groundbreaking art started gaining attention, and her first major solo exhibition in the U.S. is at Guggenheim Museum through February 3rd.
