April is National Humor Month, which was founded in 1976 by comedian Larry Wilde to increase public awareness of the therapeutic power of humor and laughter. In fact, there are many studies that show that laughter can improve our health. In light of the seemingly perpetual national discord, from the Women’s March, to Time’s Up, to March For Our Lives, and the state of U.S. politics, we think that carving out some time to joke and laugh is a valuable and necessary coping tool!

In celebration of humor, this issue features some of the top female comedians today, including Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Schumer, Tina Fey and Tiffany Haddish, as well as women who cover political and cultural news with humor such as Samantha Bee and Betches.com.  We highlight a number of events taking place this month which can provide a welcome escape including Coachella on the West coast, the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and The Women In The World Summit in New York.  We also report on the amazing Women’s NCAA Basketball Final Four stars and the top female athletes whose entertain us year round.

However, life can’t be all fun and games, and we have a follow-up report on the history-making “March For Our Lives” including the standout speeches by Parkland student activist Emma Gonzalez, 11-year-old Naomi Wadler, 9-year-old Yolanda Renee King, granddaughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and comedian Amy Schumer. We also highlight more upcoming student protests and the anti-Facebook campaign to protest  #Blackoutwithus. Speaking of campaigns, we look at designer Rebecca Minkoff’s creative “Superwomen” campaign which is featured on billboards through this month in NYC’s Times Square.

April is also International Volunteer Month and for this issue we feature TeensGive.org – a website created by our Rye Country Day School classmates Helena Zimmerman and Max Mindich that helps teens find volunteer opportunities that coincide with their interests and skills.  We encourage you to check it out and see all the opportunities there are for you to make a positive change in the world!

For this issue’s Five Questions we talk with Supermodel Emme, who is also an author, motivational speaker, clothing line creative director, and champion of positive body image.  Her joyful approach to her life and career is an inspiration for all of us.

Finally, we recommend some comedies in Theaters, on TV, in print and on the web to help you experience the joy of laughter and improved health!  As always, thank you for your support and for joining Girl Tribe. Wishing you lots of happiness, joy and laughter.
