Women in the World Summit

By Ryan Hammel

The Women in the World Summit, which presents powerful new female role models whose personal stories illuminate the most pressing international issues, is a three day event that will take place April 12-14 at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City at Lincoln Center. This year will be the ninth annual event.

There is a wide variety of women who will attend– ranging from CEOs and world leaders to artists, activists, peacemakers, and firebrand dissidents. Although the names of some of the influential women who will attend have not been publicly announced yet, some include:

  • Hillary Rodham Clinton
  • Viola Davis (Academy Award winner)
  • Ronan Farrow (contributing writer at The New Yorker, reporter who exposed the Harvey Weinstein scandal)
  • Delaney Tarr (Parkland gun control activist)
  • Leymah Gbowee (Liberian Nobel laureate)
  • Saru Jayaraman (restaurant workers’ activist)
  • Dara Khosrowshahi (Uber CEO)
  • Kirsten Gillibrand and Lisa Murkowski (U.S Senators)
  • Misty Copeland (best-selling author and principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre)
  • Julianna Margulies (award-winning actress and star of Dietland)
  • Nicholas Kristof (The New York Times columnist)
  • Jameela Jamil (actress, writer, and activist)
  • Joy-Ann Reid (MSNBC anchor)
  • Dr. Fozia Alvi (a volunteer in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh)

The Summit’s high technology including vivid journalistic narratives, high-impact video, and fast-paced staging, have made it the chief platform to showcase women of influence.

Tina Brown, the organizer of this year’s event, says, “We’re obviously going to be covering some of the biggest issues of the year, but I think what has made Women in the World special, and what we’ll be doing again this year, is highlighting some of the unsung heroes who are making a difference, too.” Brown discusses the explosion of passion, emotion, and dedication that will be prevalent at the event, as this year has been immensely progressive for women.
