Nia Dacosta Becomes First Black Women to Direct a Marvel Movie

By Kristina Montgomery

Marvel has a new female to add to their ticket, Nia Dacosta, the newly chosen director of Captain Marvel 2! The film is a sequel to the 2019 movie starring Brie Larsonl as Captain Marvel, a female superhero.

DaCosta has been directing films since 2018. DaCosta is known for her work writing and directing crime drama Little Woods and 2020 horror movie Candyman.

The hiring of DaCosta comes as Marvel works to gender-balance their historically male-run studio. In conjunction with DaCosta’s hire, were hires of other female directors, including Cate Shortlandto and Chloé Zhao

Aside from the excitement of female direction, Captain Marvel 2 is predicted to break records. Even though the movie’s budget has yet to be confirmed, considering that the first Captain Marvel movie reportedly cost $152 million, the sequel could break records as the largest budgeted movie directed by a Black woman.

Marvel Studios announced that Captain Marvel 2 would hit theatres June 8th, 2020; however, this release date risks being postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
