Women’s voices continue to be amplified around the world in politics, business, sports, fashion, art, and entertainment—all fields that men have historically dominated.
However, society has yet to achieve true gender equality and women are often repressed, abused, and silenced. Conservative, male-run governments regularly strip women of political power and basic human rights, such as the right to reproductive freedom.
The Women’s Rights Movement has a long way to go, and supporting the tireless work of women-led organizations and human rights activists is a major step forward.
So, what are some of the organizations at the forefront of this movement?
Malala Yousadzai and her father Ziauddin founded the Malala FUnd in 2013 to support “every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.” Today, about 120 million girls are out of school. The Malala Fund focuses in regions where most girls are unable to receive secondary education, such as Nigeria and Ethiopia. The organization invests in local education activists and petitions at local, national, and international levels for policy changes and resources that support girls’ education.
Women for Women International is global community that invests in female survivors of war and conflict. They provide women social and economic skills to transform their lives. This organization focuses their efforts in 8 countries around the world where women have felt devastating effects of war, including Afghanistan and South Sudan. This organization offers a variety of programs such has the Community Advocacy Program, Graduate Support Program, and Conflict Response Fund.
MADRE, founded in 1983, is an international human rights organization that aims to deliver sustainable gender, racial, climate, and disability justice. This organization is rooted in feminist values as women and other marginalized groups fully participate in shaping policies. MADRE works with local women and girl leaders to address causes of conflict in their areas. Additionally, MADRE works with girls, women, and LGBTQIA+ people to advance their rights and voices. The organization aims to increase access to clean land, air, and water by working to unravel economic and political systems that drive the climate crisis.
