Australian Open 2019: Serena Williams Returns

By Charlotte Price

As 2019 begins, so does the Australian Open (January 7th-27th). The world’s top 102 women have confirmed that they will all compete in the tournament, as well as Serena Williams, who is now seeded 17th. At the top of the women’s rankings is Simona Halep (No. 1), Angelique Kerber (No. 2), and Caroline Wozniacki (No. 3). Wozniacki will be focused on defending her 2018 Australian Open title, but Williams will also be looking to gain back her 2017 Australian Open title. Williams withdrew from the Australian Open last year due to complications with her pregnancy, but is now eager and ready to compete. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam winner, and is very familiar with the Australian Open, as she has won 7 of them altogether. Her return is very exciting for fans and will be somewhat of a fresh start for Williams after taking a long break.
